The City of Barre Proclaims September 29 YouthBuild Day!

ReSOURCE is proud to announce Barre Mayor Lucas J. Herring proclaimed Saturday, September 29th as YouthBuild Day in the City of Barre. The proclamation encourages residents to recognize the positive environmental impact made by the students and graduates of ReSOURCE YouthBuild by bringing your unwanted goods to Barre reuse and recycling centers like ReSOURCE, CVSWMD, & the Montpelier Rover event on that day. See you the 29th!

 

CITY OF BARRE, VERMONT MAYORAL PROCLAMATION

 

A PROCLAMATION HONORING YOUTHBUILD

 

WHEREAS, YouthBuild USA began changing lives in 1978, with the support from its nonprofit
sponsors, to positively rebuild their communities and their lives as well as breaking the cycle of
poverty; and

 

WHEREAS, ReSOURCE has been a proud YouthBuild USA affiliate since 2004; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Barre has hosted ReSOURCE and the YouthBuild Program since 2009; and

 

WHEREAS, ReSOURCE YouthBuild program provides an alternative pathway to a high school
credential and essential job skills training to Barre’s youth, has enrolled 103 students and given
them a new opportunity to find success and become leaders in our community, has issued 65 high
school diplomas and more than 60 industry recognized skill certifications while placing 64 youth in
a job or college; and

 

WHEREAS, the ReSOURCE YouthBuild program has built 11 of units of affordable housing,
weatherized 4 of units of affordable housing and completed over 74 solar hot water and solar
photovoltaic installations; and

 

WHEREAS, ReSOURCE YouthBuild trainees have completed 93,000 hours of community service for
hundreds of different nonprofits and government agencies with projects including Hurricane Irene
flood relief work in the Waterbury and Mad River Valley (2012);

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Lucas J. Herring, Mayor of the City of Barre, Vermont, do hereby proclaim September 29th, 2018, as YouthBuild Day in the City of Barre and encourage
residents to recognize the positive impact made by the students and graduates of ReSOURCE
YouthBuild as well as ReSOURCE’s Board, staff, and volunteers on the City of Barre, our
environment, and our community.

What is Career Start?

Career Start is a program designed for high school students to gain hands-on experience and technical skills in various departments at ReSOURCE’s Burlington or Barre locations.

High school students enrolled in school are eligible to participate in the Career Start program.

The program provides hands-on experience in ReSOURCE departments, technical skills training, and monthly personal and professional development classes.

There is a fee of $1500, but tuition is waived for qualifying Vermonters.

Departments include Customer Service & Retail, Office Administration, Computers and Electronics, Overlook Cafe, and Large Appliances, among others.

Yes, students earn a monthly stipend

Training covers Health and Wellness, Goal Setting and Achievement, Leadership Development, Career Planning, and Financial Literacy.
