On Thursday, November 10, 2022, The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) honored their national recycling awards recipients at their Virtual 2022 Annual National Recycling Congress. The awards were digitally presented to the winners. ReSOURCE received an Outstanding Not-for-Profit Business Leadership award given to an Outstanding Recycling Organization: state or other recycling organization with outstanding growth, programs, leadership, or contributions / impacts in the field..
The annual awards program is designed to honor and recognize outstanding individuals, programs, and organizations around the country, both for their achievements and to serve as a model and a resource for learning for NRC members. Award categories recognize outstanding programs in For-Profit Businesses, Higher Education, Non-Profit Organizations, Recycling Organizations, Diversion Innovation, Community / Governmental Programs, Outstanding Emerging Leader, and Lifetime Achievement. The NRC will be posting information on all winners on the NRC’s website.
NRC’s Awards Committee Chair, Lisa Skumatz, commented on the process expressing the views of fellow committee members, “we received over 105 nominations this year for the awards” and “picking just one winner in each category was difficult, but also rewarding to see the great efforts and programs around the country for recycling and organics diversion.” Dr. Skumatz noted that this year’s winners varied in size and region of the country from a small environmental learning center for residents and visitors in Vail, Colorado, to large organizations like Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Dr. Skumatz continues to elaborate, “we [had] programs recycling glass with the purpose of creating quality end products to close the loop in a circular economy,” programs “providing recycling and disposal options for boat flares that are being discarded in our oceans,” and lastly programs who have “essential roles with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law for packaging at the state level.” “Many of these programs have and will continue to make huge strides in this new world of virtual outreach,” Skumatz states.
