Colin Wesley Palmer is a YouthBuild graduate and current student teaching assistant at YouthBuild. He helps students fulfill their coursework and maintain their focus while continuing his educational pursuits. His current interests include skateboarding and computer programming.
For Palmer, YouthBuild was a refreshing change from high school. He says, “I’m the kind of person when I participate in work or job I really don’t find a flow unless there is a moral drive to get me invested.” YouthBuild sparked his eye because of its connection with Americorps. “I developed some awesome skills in the trades,” states Palmer, “which I don’t see myself working in the trades, but just these skills are so crucial that many people don’t have.” Palmer developed a strong relationship with the staff, which fostered his passions for political and social awareness.
As a student, YouthBuild was the perfect fit for palmer because it didn’t focus solely on grades but rather concentrated on his comprehension. Now graduated, Palmer works with YouthBuild staff to strengthen resumes, send in applications, and look at higher-level education. It is an experience he’s had nowhere else: “I finally get the opportunity to take risks and be introduced to new skills, like farming and trades,” said Palmer. There are various opportunities at YouthBuild to take advantage of, and Palmer is happy he found this community.
