The preamble to the U.S. Constitution states that the document’s purpose is to “to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty.” The recent violence against Asian Americans, the mass shootings with weapons made for war, continuing efforts to suppress voting, and police violence against black Americans are each depressing realities that show that principles laid out in our founding documents remain aspirational. As citizens, we must continue to work every day to advance freedom, justice and opportunity for all. ReSOURCE as an organization shares in this work to make our nation’s aspirations reality for all.
As President Abraham Lincoln put it in his Gettysburg Address, we must be “dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
